Albany State University will present its annual Veterans Day observance at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, on campus between the L. Orene Hall Building and Sanford Gymnasium.

This year’s speaker will be the Rev. James C. Bush, pastor of Greater Pines Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Albany and owner of Bush Ventures Inc. (BVI), a business consulting firm that specializes in jury selection, sensitivity training, public relations, media strategies and Veterans Administration benefits. BVI also focuses on helping qualified minority-owned businesses participate in construction projects.

In the first of a series of programs on different health-care facets in the Albany area, the Kiwanis Club of Dougherty County heard November 2 from the CEO of a community-based health service provider.

Tary Brown, chief executive officer of Albany Area Primary Health Care, Inc., (AAPHC) spoke to the club about the services his organization provides for patients via community health centers across its five-county service area, which includes Dougherty, Baker, Calhoun, Lee, and Terrell counties. Care is provided in the specialties of internal and family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, and gynecology, along with general dentistry. The community health center designation is made under federal guidelines for HPSA (health professional service area, based on physician to population ratio) and MUA (medically underserved area, based on data such as HPSA, infant mortality rate, percentage of poverty, and population rate of elderly).

Buster gets his ball back

As if hitting a home run and catching the final out in a victorious World Series during your rookie year isn’t enough, Leesburg’s Buster Posey’s wonderful inaugural season ended splendidly: He got his home run ball back.

And it didn’t cost the San Francisco Giants’ catcher an arm and a leg to get it – not that Posey couldn’t afford it.

The unidentified fan who – while the world was watching – prevailed in a ferocious battle for the ball in centerfield gave Posey the ball after the game. All he wanted in exchange was some autographed photos and his picture taken with the darling of Major League Baseball. That wasn’t much, considering that he could have held out for thousands – if not tens of thousands – of dollars, as some fans have done in similar situations.

Then, says Dougherty County Superior Court Judge Denise Marshall, life can be a dream.

“Stay focused in your goals, stay focused in your dreams, and stay focused in what you want to be,” Marshall told about 700 Albany Technical College graduates Friday night at the Albany Civic Center.

The Kiwanis Club of Dougherty County embarked on a new year October 1, sealing the deal with the installation of new officers and directors at a special evening dinner meeting and ceremonies at the Hilton Garden Inn on September 27.

Leading the club this year is Mike Bertram, who accepted the president’s gavel from 2009-10 president Dorene Parker. Parker is now officially recognized as immediate past president. Other officers for the next 12 months are president-elect Todd Butler; vice-president Bill McDaniel; secretary Tommy Gay; and, returning as treasurer, Alan Greer. Tapped for this year’s board of directors are Jay Carpenter, Rob Collins, Laura Cook, Greg Fullerton, Jim Huffaker, Dr. Phil Roberts, and Johnny Seabrooks.

After Christi Dykes and her husband watched a 60-year-old woman complete a triathlon with a smile on her face and excitement in her eyes, they became inspired.

“We had also seen Rick and Dick Hoyt on the news,” said Dykes. “They are a father and son team which competes in ironman triathlons together. Dick Hoyt is 80 years old and his son is 40 years old with cerebral palsy. They are an inspiring team and after seeing all of this, I decided that we could do it, too.”

This photo snapped Oct. 16 at Chehaw’s Wild Animal Park by Americus resident Chris Barr of his beaming son, David, and wife, Christi, is sure to be on a Chamber of Commerce brochure someday. Meerkats, members of the mongoose family that live in the Kalahari Desert in Botswana and in South Africa, are among Chehaw’s newest animals. Chehaw guests are able to get up-close and peronal with the zoo’s first interactive exhibit, which includes a windwo that looks into the meerkats’ underground burrow.

On Friday, Oct. 29, the Albany State Early Learning Center will host a fall festival that’s free and open to the public. It will last from 1 until 3:30 p.m. at the center with the help of ELC parents and ASU student volunteers. Activities for children will include a fishing table, cake walk, face painting, NASA space ice cream, an art table and more.

Jeanette Lucas, director of the Early Learning Center, is excited about the event.
